Euclid is surrounded by the city of Cleveland to the West, South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Lyndhurst, Mayfield and Richmond Heights to the South, Willowick, Wickliffe, and Willoughby Hills to the East, and Lake Erie to the North. Euclid is part of the Lake Erie Snowbelt region which is prone to snow squalls blowing off of Lake Erie, particularly before the lake freezes solid for the winter.
Euclid’s history began back in the 18th century and is filled with plenty of early mid-western city commonalities and charm. The city was named after a Greek mathematician named Euclid and was settled in 1796. The area then went through a series of subsequent changes as it grew and evolved; Euclid became a township in 1809, a village in 1903, and a city in 1930 during the Great Depression.

While Euclid was still a township back in the 1800s, it was one of the first communities to be established in the Western Reserve. A contract between Superintendent Moses Cleaveland and 41 employees at the Connecticut Land Company created the Euclid Survey Township. In the early years, the village was a small farming community, with most residents making their living in cash crops of wheat and table grapes. The first industries in the area were saltworks, a sawmill, a gristmill, and a ship building.
During World War II, Euclid experienced a time of sudden growth when an influx of new industries came in and started replacing the farmland. The city planners in Euclid helped to ensure smooth and orderly growth by segregating commercial and industrial lands from its residential neighborhoods, making them pioneers of the concept of modern zoning.
