South Euclid is a city located within Cuyahoga County in Ohio. It’s an inner-ring suburb of the city of Cleveland, located on the East side of the city. The population in South Euclid is 22,295.
The area that is currently South Euclid used to be a part of the Western Reserve, an area that was obtained via treaty with the Iroquois confederation in 1796 by the Connecticut Land Company. A year later, in 1797, Moses Cleveland, named the area Euclid after the Greek “patron saint” of surveyors. In 1809 Euclid township was officially formed and in 1828, it was divided into nine districts, with South Euclid becoming district two.

The city of Cleveland is an interesting city thanks to its many districts and subdivisions. Each subdivision has its own interesting history and landmarks, and South Euclid is no exception. In the earliest days, the main industry in the city was farming. By the 1860s, quarrying took over as the town’s main economic backbone thanks to the rich Bluestone deposits in the area.
There were two separate locations for quarrying—the first along Nine Mile Creek and the second along what is today the Euclid Creek Reservation. These two were consolidated by the Forest City Stone Company in the early 1870s. This resulted in the area becoming one of the largest producers of stone.
In 1917, the residents of South Euclid wanted to have an autonomous relationship from the Euclid Township and on October 13th, they become incorporated as a village. During this time there were vast improvements in poured concrete, which decreased the quarrying frenzy that had carried the area economically until that point. That didn’t stop South Euclid from growing, though, the area grew exponentially both economically and in population well into the early decades of the 20th century.
Today, South Euclid, just East of Cleveland Heights, and Northeast of University Heights, is a great place for families and working professionals alike. Residents and visitors enjoy the suburban feel while still maintaining nice proximity to the city to enjoy all its conveniences. South Euclid has four public parks: Quarry, Victory, Bexley, and Oakwood.
There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, lodging, and entertainment to satisfy people of all ages and preferences. Quarry Park is a local hotspot all year long thanks to its big, beautiful playground and the dog park which attracts residents of all ages. Whether you’re visiting South Euclid for the first time or you’ve lived there your whole life, you’re sure to feel right at home in this welcoming neighborhood.
